All-optical binary computation based on inverse design method

Abstract The development of information technology urgently requires ultrafast, ultra-low energy consumption and ultra-high-capacity data computing abilities. Traditional method electronic chips is limited by the bottleneck Moore’s Law. All-optical photonic provides a promising way to realize such high-performance Until now, it still huge challenge all-optical four arithmetic operations at same time on chip. Here, we propose new encoding scheme for binary computation, including n -bit addition, subtraction, multiplication division. We theoretically present calculation experimentally demonstrate 1 bit calculation. computation part includes half adder shifter, whose feature sizes are only 2 ?m × 19.5 4 9 ?m, respectively. shifter consist three low-loss basic devices through inverse design method. distance between two adjacent smaller than 1.5 within wavelength magnitude scale. response propagation signal light in single device, 100 fs. threshold 10 fJ/bit. Our results provide processing abilities computing.

We experimentally demonstrate an all-optical binary counter composed of four semiconductor optical amplifier based all-optical switching gates. The time-of-flight optical circuit operates with bit-differential delays between the exclusive-OR gate used for modulo-2 binary addition and the AND gate used for binary carry detection.
